3. 洛桑圣母大教堂 Lausanne Cathedral, also known as Notre Dame de la Cité, is the Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Evian in Switzerland. It lies at the southern end of the old town on the south side of Lake Léman between the villages of Vidy and Ouchy. The first church on this site was built by the Romans who established a settlement around AD 15 BC , but it has long since vanished and only fragments are now visible to the naked eye, such as an inscription over one of the doorways which dated from the second or third century.
The present structure dates back mainly to the thirteenth century although much of what can be seen today is in fact late medieval work with some Renaissance features, as well as more recent alterations made during the eighteenth century when new windows were added, the nave transepts were lengthened and a dome was placed over the crossing , though this was later replaced by another tower in Neo-Gothic style. Work continued up until the nineteenth century, notably on building the choir stalls and replacing several stained glass windows including that above the main west door where there is an elaborate rose window dating probably from circa 1320. Some notable names involved include Jean Cocteau who designed stained glass for the north windows depicting saints from the Alpine region, and Marc Chagall whose work includes two large murals on either side of the sanctuary representing Noah’s Ark on the right and Jesus Christ descending into Paradise on the left. In addition, a huge wooden crucifix was donated by King James I of England in thanksgiving for his victory against the Scots at the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. One small feature worth mentioning
